The Tassel Addition

Tassels, to me speak of opulence, decadence and beauty.

However, the type of tassel can be as simple and basic as wool wrapped with cord, then progressing to the not so simple; segments built in complex structures of ruffs, bullions and jasmines, with gradations in between the two. Tassels can be as simple or as complex as you want. From the basic tassel to the very ornate, there is, in my mind, room for plenty of tassels in our lives!

The skill that it takes to make these wonderful pieces is also awesome. Sadly, this particular craft - the art of Passementerie, is endangered. Manufactured trims, braids and tassels are available but the real hand made pieces are only made by a few people (who know how to make them) in the UK.

I went to the V&A in London and had a look at some of the examples of tassels that they have on display.

Below are examples of tassels that I found in the V&A gallery in London, the ones in the middle picture are from the Tudor period - incredible and so charming.
